It’s a compilation of our favorite #modernartists and their iconic works. Written in a conversation style, it shares anecdotes and fun facts that make art history and theory accessible to young readers.

With my pre-reader we love comparing different works of art by the same artists to see patterns.

Who can read backwards and guess where I am? 😄

It’s @ourbookshoptring, where I spent a good chunk of this afternoon browsing beautiful books and chatting to the lovely owner, Ben. The next photo shows the books I managed to restrain myself to buying!

Props to @michellerobinson and @nick.easty for making a book that was completely irresistible to my newly space-loving daughter - she wouldn’t even look at other picture books 😁

And the @nizrite and @romatheengineer/@katiehickeyillustration ones are just for me! (Being 2, Willa probably needs a few more years to fully appreciate them)

We had the BEST time in Tring, walking in the beautiful former-quarry nature reserve (we saw a lizard!)🦎, gorging ourselves at @nonnassupperclub and finishing up with a visit to this wonderful bookshop. I couldn’t recommend all three more highly!

Today is World Art Day and we are filling our Good Friday with Easter themed arts and crafts.

I live in a house filled with artists. All the children and Daddy love drawing, painting, crafting, creating, sculpting, shaping. They can turn nothing into something and I am in awe of their creativity and talents.

Art is a wonderful escape, a release and a wonderful way for children to process big emotions. It is also just A LOT of fun. The sun is shining, today is a day for music and creating including baking some yummy Easter treats.

Exciting news!!

I'm so honoured to say that I'm this year's Author in Residence for the amazing @inspireculturenotts! 🥳🤩

I'll be working with Artist in Residence, illustrator extraordinaire Pete Gray (check out his artwork at @bigappetite.illustration), to put on creative workshops and an interactive exhibition for the children of Nottinghamshire. I'm so happy to be part of this great project to show kids how brilliantly fun reading and creating books can be!

I've always wanted to be an author in residence (admittedly, before I even really knew what it meant – doesn't it just sound like a good thing?!) And this is just the perfect opportunity to get children really excited about reading, writing and making art through the summer holidays and far beyond 📚✨

We'll be based at Mansfield Central Library in the summer term, delivering fun workshops to local schools. And in the summer holidays we'll have fun family sessions, too! If you're in the area and have kids to entertain, keep an eye out for what's coming up... and please do spread the word! 📣

I can't quite believe that I'm seeing Modern Art Explorer, a book that I wrote, here among some of my absolute favourite new children's books! 😍

I confess, I got a little teary-eyed reading what the teachers who voted for these special awards said:
"Modern Art Explorer by Alice Harman can genuinely help a reader move from confusion and scepticism to understanding and appreciation."

That is my greatest hope for what this book can do – to show how accessible and fascinating art can be, for EVERYONE 🎨

It's SO exciting to imagine your book idea turned into a paper-and-ink reality. And it's really important to understand how traditional publishing and the children's book market works, if that's the direction you want to go, because it will be a huuuge help to you.

BUT taking things too seriously too soon can really suck all the fun out of an idea. And that's the last thing any children's author wants!

It’s @booknookhove! I SO miss being around the corner from this wonderful children’s bookshop in the Hove end of Brighton & Hove. ⁣

I only just remembered to snap a quick picture so it’s not the best, but for context I was pushing a wheelchair and with two very excited toddlers 😁 ⁣
⁣
And the important bit is that the book selection was as brilliant as ever - one excited toddler (mine) got another of her beloved @sophyhenn Ted board books, and one excited toddler (my niece) got the brilliant Never Show a T-Rex a Book by @rashmiwriting. I could have got 100 more! ⁣

If you speak Dutch, you won't have needed to guess! This is the new Dutch-language edition of Climate Change (and How We'll Fix It), one of my favourite books that I've written 🌎⁣

There are lots of fabulous kids' books that help young readers understand what climate change is, and what the main solutions are for managing it ✅⁣
⁣
But this one is a little different because it looks at why, when we know what we need to do and how important it is, it's just not happening! Or not quickly enough, at least... ⏳⁣

So after a recap of the science behind climate change, the book looks at the social and political factors standing in the way of a solution – using v fun illustrated chats between a cast of different characters 🗣⁣

Then it helps kids to explore the different ways we can work together fairly, sensitively and decisively to save our planet. With plenty of practical tips and fun ideas to get started! 🌱⁣

Luckily she felt the same way as I do about @yuvalzommer's beautiful new book, The Lights that Dance in the Night, which you can see here 😍⁣

So it came home with us, along with an agonisingly reasonable mini-stack of more absolute gems. (If my husband hadn't been there, I probably would have needed a trolley) 😬⁣
